Red-eye, the overnight flight that lands with the sunrise

A red-eye is an overnight flight that lands in the early morning. At Schiphol it means a day to fill before check-in and a body that barely slept.

The name comes from the eyes of the passengers who step off one: an overnight flight that departs in the evening and lands in the early morning, after a night spent upright in a seat. Into Schiphol, red-eyes arrive mainly from North America and from parts of Asia and the Middle East, and they tend to land between half past five and nine.

The problem it creates

A red-eye delivers a traveller at the moment when hotel rooms are least available. Standard check-in is in the early afternoon, and the gap between the arrivals hall and a bed can be six hours or more. The traveller is tired, stiff and slightly disoriented, and has a whole day ahead with no real night behind it.

Where a session fits

If the room is available on arrival, because it was booked from the night before or because an early check-in came through, a session in the first hours after landing loosens a body that has been folded into a seat all night. If the room only comes in the afternoon, the session is better placed in the early evening, closing the first day and running straight into an early night. The guide to the first day after a red-eye works through both plans.

Arranging it before boarding

The departure lounge is the place to start. The thread needs the flight, the scheduled landing, the area of the hotel, whether the room will be ready and the length you want. The journey time is agreed, half the fee goes ahead because the room is at the airport, and the start is confirmed before the doors close.

Direction matters

A red-eye from the west lands a body that believes it is the middle of the night. A red-eye from the east lands a body running several hours ahead. The first usually benefits from rest in the morning; the second from daylight and an evening session. The body clock entry explains why.
